Tip Reference Table
Tip reference table shows common tip amounts for popular bill totals at standard tip percentages.
How to Calculate a Tip
Calculating a tip is a straightforward multiplication. Multiply the bill amount by the tip percentage expressed as a decimal. A 20% tip on a $60 bill is $60 x 0.20 = $12. Add $12 to $60 and your total is $72.
If you want one step, multiply the bill by (1 + tip rate). For 20%, that is 1.20. So $60 x 1.20 = $72 gives you the full amount in one calculation.
Mental Math for Tipping
Find 10% first by moving the decimal point one place to the left. For a $45 bill, 10% is $4.50. Double it for 20% ($9.00). Add half of 10% to get 15% ($4.50 + $2.25 = $6.75).
Should You Tip Before or After Tax?
Tipping on the pre-tax subtotal is the traditional approach, since tax is not a service the server provides. Use the “Do not tip on tax” checkbox above and enter the tax amount to calculate gratuity only on the food and drink total.
Tipping Customs by Country
Tipping customs vary significantly around the world. Understanding local norms helps you show appreciation in culturally appropriate ways.

Frequently Asked Questions
To calculate a 20% tip, multiply your bill by 0.20. For a $50 bill, that is $10. Your total with tip is $60. You can also multiply the bill by 1.20 to get the full amount in one step.
In the United States, the standard tip at a restaurant is 15% to 20% of the pre-tax bill. 15% is acceptable for average service, 18% is common, and 20% or more reflects excellent service. For poor service, tipping 10% is appropriate.
Tipping on the pre-tax subtotal is the traditionally correct approach, because tax is not a service the server provides. However, most people tip on the total bill including tax out of convenience. The difference is small, typically under a dollar on a typical meal.
To split a tip evenly, divide the total bill including tip by the number of people in your group. Enter the number of people in the calculator above and it will show exactly what each person owes. For a $120 total split among 4, each person pays $30.
At a bar, tip $1 per drink for simple beer or wine orders. For cocktails or full bar tabs, 15% to 20% of the total is customary. At upscale cocktail bars, 20% is the standard expectation.
The tip formula is: Tip = Bill Amount x (Tip Percentage / 100). The total you pay is: Total = Bill Amount + Tip. To find per-person cost: Per Person = Total / Number of People.
Tipping customs vary by country. In Japan and Australia it is generally not expected and can even seem rude. In Europe a small tip of 5% to 10% is appreciated but not obligatory. In countries like Brazil and Mexico, 10% is a common expectation. Always check local customs when traveling.
