How Speed Unit Conversion Works
Speed conversion uses a consistent base unit method. Every unit is first converted to meters per second using a known factor, then converted from m/s to the target unit.
Conversion Method
The formula is: Result = Input Value × (Factor of From Unit) / (Factor of To Unit). For example, to convert 60 mph to km/h: 60 × 0.44704 / 0.27778 = 96.56 km/h.
SI Standard
The International System of Units (SI) defines meters per second as the standard speed unit. Scientific and engineering applications prefer m/s, while everyday transport uses mph or km/h depending on region.
Nautical Speed
Marine and aviation navigation uses knots, where one knot equals one nautical mile per hour. A nautical mile is 1,852 meters, slightly longer than a standard mile of 1,609.34 meters.
Frequently Asked Questions
To convert mph to km/h, multiply by 1.60934. For example, 60 mph × 1.60934 = 96.56 km/h. To go the other direction, divide km/h by 1.60934 to get mph.
100 km/h equals 27.78 meters per second. Divide km/h by 3.6 to get m/s: 100 / 3.6 = 27.78 m/s.
One knot equals approximately 1.15078 miles per hour. Knots are nautical miles per hour, and one nautical mile equals 1.852 kilometers or about 1.151 statute miles.
To convert meters per second to miles per hour, multiply by 2.23694. For example, 10 m/s × 2.23694 = 22.37 mph.
The SI unit for speed is meters per second (m/s). All other speed units can be converted to and from m/s using standard conversion factors published by NIST.
