What Is a Cubic Yard?
A cubic yard is a standard unit of volume used throughout construction and landscaping in the United States. Picture a perfect cube measuring 3 feet on every side: that is exactly one cubic yard. Because each side is 3 feet, you get 3 x 3 x 3 = 27 cubic feet in a single cubic yard.
Suppliers of mulch, gravel, topsoil, sand, and ready-mix concrete all price and deliver material by the cubic yard. Knowing the correct volume before you order prevents expensive overages and frustrating shortages mid-project.
How to Calculate Cubic Yards
Calculating cubic yards from a rectangular area is straightforward once all measurements are in the same unit. The most common approach uses feet.
Step 1: Convert Everything to Feet
Measurements in inches must be divided by 12. For example, a depth of 4 inches equals 4 divided by 12, or 0.333 feet. Centimeters divide by 30.48 and meters multiply by 3.2808.
Step 2: Multiply Length x Width x Depth
This gives you cubic feet. For a 10 foot by 12 foot area at 4 inches deep you would calculate: 10 x 12 x 0.333 = 40 cubic feet.
Step 3: Divide by 27
Dividing by 27 converts cubic feet into cubic yards. In the example above: 40 divided by 27 = 1.48 cubic yards.
Formulas for Other Shapes
- Circle: Area = 3.14159 x (Diameter / 2)^2, then Volume = Area x Depth, then divide by 27
- Triangle: Area = 0.5 x Base x Height, then Volume = Area x Depth, then divide by 27
- Trapezoid: Area = ((Side A + Side B) / 2) x Height, then Volume = Area x Depth, then divide by 27
- Rectangle Border: Total Area minus Inner Area = Border Area, then multiply by Depth and divide by 27
- Annulus: Outer Circle Area minus Inner Circle Area, then multiply by Depth and divide by 27

Mulch and Garden Beds
Most landscape professionals apply mulch at a depth of 2 to 3 inches for garden beds and 3 to 4 inches along pathways. Spreading mulch too thin lets weeds push through; piling it too thick can suffocate plant roots and trap moisture against stems.
Gravel Driveways and Paths
A gravel driveway typically needs 4 to 6 inches of compacted gravel base. Because gravel compacts as it settles, add 10 to 15 percent to your calculated volume before ordering. This prevents running short after the delivery truck leaves.
Concrete Slabs and Footings
Concrete is ordered and poured by the cubic yard. A standard 4 inch residential slab covering 100 square feet requires about 1.23 cubic yards.
