How to Convert Percent to Decimal
Percent to decimal conversion follows one simple rule: divide the percentage by 100. The word percent literally means “per hundred,” so 45% means 45 out of 100, which equals 0.45 as a decimal.
The fastest shortcut is moving the decimal point two places to the left. You do not need to do any division at all. Write the percent number, find the decimal point (or place one after the last digit), then slide it two spots left.
The Decimal Point Shortcut
Every whole number has an invisible decimal point after it. So 60 is really 60.0 and 60% becomes 0.60 by moving that point left twice. For numbers like 8%, you move left to get 0.08, adding a leading zero to hold the place.
When You Need Percent to Decimal Conversion
Percent to decimal conversion is needed any time you use a percentage in a math formula or spreadsheet calculation. Most formulas require decimal form, not percent form.
Real World Uses
In finance, an interest rate of 5% must be entered as 0.05 to calculate interest. In statistics, a probability of 30% is written as 0.30 in equations. In Excel, multiplying a value by a percent requires the decimal form. Tax calculations, discount pricing, and tip amounts all rely on this conversion behind the scenes.
Converting Back: Decimal to Percent
To reverse the process, multiply the decimal by 100 and add the percent sign. So 0.72 multiplied by 100 equals 72%. Move the decimal point two places to the right as a shortcut.
