How to Calculate Square Footage

Square footage calculation depends on the shape of the area you are measuring. The most common scenario is a rectangular room where area = length × width.

Rectangular and Square Rooms

For a rectangle, multiply length by width in feet. For a 15 ft by 12 ft room, area = 180 sq ft. For a square room, multiply the side length by itself.

Circular Areas

For circular areas like round patios, use area = π × (diameter / 2)². A circular patio 12 ft in diameter has area π × 6² ≈ 113.1 sq ft.

Adding a Waste Factor

When ordering flooring, tile, or carpet, always add a waste factor of 5 to 15 percent to account for cuts, breakage, and pattern matching. Enter this percentage in the calculator to get the adjusted total quantity.

Estimating Material Cost

Enter the price per square foot (or square meter or yard) to get the total material cost. This is useful for flooring, paint, sod, or any material priced per area unit.

Frequently Asked Questions

To calculate square footage of a rectangular room, multiply the length by the width in feet. For example, a room 12 feet long and 10 feet wide has an area of 12 × 10 = 120 square feet.

To convert square feet to square meters, multiply by 0.092903. For example, 100 square feet × 0.092903 = 9.29 square meters.

One acre equals exactly 43,560 square feet. To find the acreage of a piece of land, divide the total square footage by 43,560.

For an irregular room, divide the space into simpler shapes such as rectangles or triangles. Calculate the area of each section separately using the appropriate formula, then add all sections together to get the total area.

To calculate material cost, multiply the total area by the price per square foot. Add a waste factor of 5 to 10 percent for materials like tile or carpet to account for cuts and overage.
