Basic Rules of Rounding Numbers
Rounding numbers follows the same core rule regardless of which place value you are targeting.
- Identify the place value you want to round to (e.g. the tenths place).
- Look at the digit immediately to the right of that place (e.g. the hundredths digit).
- If that digit is 0 to 4, leave the target digit unchanged and drop everything to its right.
- If that digit is 5 to 9, increase the target digit by 1 and drop everything to its right.
Rounding to the Nearest Hundred: 3250
Hundreds digit: 2. Next digit to the right: 5. Since 5 is greater than or equal to 5, round up. 2 becomes 3. Result: 3300
Rounding to the Nearest Ten: 323.5
Tens digit: 2. Next digit to the right: 3. Since 3 is less than 5, keep the tens digit as 2. Result: 320
Rounding to the Nearest Tenth: 0.74

Rounding Negative Numbers
Rounding negative numbers uses the same digit-inspection rule, but the direction of rounding away from zero is toward more negative values.
This calculator uses the most common method: Round Half Away From Zero. When the deciding digit is exactly 5, positive numbers round up and negative numbers round down (more negative).
Positive: 2.5 rounds to 3 (away from zero, upward)
Negative: -2.5 rounds to -3 (away from zero, downward)
Positive: -2.4 rounds to -2 (less than halfway, toward zero)
Negative: -2.6 rounds to -3 (more than halfway, away from zero)
Negative: -2.5 rounds to -3 (away from zero, downward)

Common Rounding Uses in Daily Life
Rounding numbers appears constantly in practical everyday situations.
- Money: Rounding to the nearest cent means rounding to 2 decimal places (hundredths).
- Measurement: Cutting lumber to the nearest quarter inch requires rounding to 0.25 (see Round to Nearest Multiple).
- Science: Reporting a result like 9.8067 m/s² to 2 decimal places gives 9.81 m/s².
- Statistics: Rounding data for presentations or reports reduces clutter without losing meaning.
- Estimation: Rounding grocery prices to the nearest dollar lets you quickly estimate a total in your head.
Frequently Asked Questions
Look at the ones digit. If it is 5 or greater, increase the tens digit by 1 and set the ones digit to 0. If it is 4 or less, keep the tens digit as is and set the ones digit to 0. For example, 46 rounds to 50 and 43 rounds to 40.
Identify the decimal place you want to keep, then look at the digit immediately to its right. If that digit is 5 or greater, increase the last kept digit by 1. If it is 4 or less, keep it unchanged and drop all digits further to the right.
Round half away from zero means that when the deciding digit is exactly 5, you round in the direction that moves the result farther from zero. Positive 2.5 becomes 3 (moves up, away from zero). Negative -2.5 becomes -3 (moves down, away from zero). This is the most widely used rounding convention.
Look at the third decimal place (the thousandths digit). If it is 5 or greater, increase the hundredths digit by 1. If it is 4 or less, leave the hundredths digit as is and drop the rest. For example, 3.456 rounds to 3.46 and 3.454 rounds to 3.45.
Rounding up means increasing the target digit by 1 when the next digit is 5 or more. Rounding down means keeping the target digit unchanged when the next digit is 4 or less. The standard rule rounds up for digits 5 through 9 and rounds down for digits 0 through 4.
Yes. Look at the hundreds digit. If it is 5 or greater, increase the thousands digit by 1 and set the hundreds, tens, and ones digits to 0. If the hundreds digit is 4 or less, keep the thousands digit and set all lower digits to 0. For example, 3,750 rounds to 4,000 and 3,249 rounds to 3,000.
Use the same digit inspection rule as for positive numbers. With the Round Half Away From Zero method, -2.5 rounds to -3 (not -2) because -3 is farther from zero. -2.4 rounds to -2 because the deciding digit (4) is less than 5, so you move toward zero.
